Northrop Grumman launches robotic satellite service vehicle with dual-use arms

Northrop Grumman’s first Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) was launched aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral. The spacecraft carries two robotic arms and three Mission Extension Pods that can extend a satellite’s operational life by up to eight years. It is designed to inspect, refuel, tow, relocate and even deactivate satellites, and can also help clear orbital debris.

The MRV’s payload includes Extension Pods intended for commercial satellites operated by Australia’s Optus and Luxembourg’s SES. The robotic‑arm system was developed under the DARPA‑led Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites program with the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. While presented as a commercial servicing platform, officials note the same capabilities could be used for military purposes, such as disabling hostile satellites, with deployment decisions left to the U.S. government. U.S. Space Force officials have warned that rival nations are already developing near‑proximity satellite technologies.
