Overview

In late July 2026, Northrop Grumman launched the Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral. Funded by approximately $420 million from DARPA’s Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites program, the MRV is an autonomous spacecraft designed to inspect, repair, upgrade, and relocate satellites in orbit.

The vehicle is equipped with two seven-degree-of-freedom robotic arms and three Mission Extension Pods (MEPs) designed to attach “space backpacks” to geostationary satellites. This technology allows for refueling and the installation of propulsion modules, extending the operational life of commercial spacecraft by up to eight years. This represents a shift from the traditional “launch-and-forget” model toward a reusable orbital-servicing industry.

A primary upcoming objective involves Australia’s Optus D3 communications satellite. Following a successful undocking by a previous Mission Extension Vehicle, the MRV is scheduled to rendezvous with Optus D3 in late 2027 to install a permanent propulsion pod, potentially extending the satellite’s life by up to six years.

While marketed for commercial use—including customers such as Luxembourg’s SES—officials have noted the dual-use nature of the technology. The same capabilities used for maintenance could be employed for military purposes, such as disabling hostile satellites. U.S. Space Force officials have highlighted that rival nations are already developing similar near-proximity satellite technologies.
