Northrop Grumman launches robotic spacecraft for satellite servicing
Northrop Grumman has launched its Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) alongside three Mission Extension Pods (MEPs) aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The MRV is an advanced autonomous spacecraft designed to inspect, repair, upgrade, and relocate satellites in orbit.
Equipped with two seven-jointed robotic arms developed through DARPA’s Robotic Servicing of Geosynchronous Satellites program, the MRV acts as a mobile mechanic in space. One of its primary upcoming objectives involves Australia’s Optus D3 communications satellite. After a Mission Extension Vehicle successfully undocked from Optus D3, the MRV is scheduled to rendezvous with the satellite in late 2027 to install a permanent propulsion pod.
This process aims to extend the operational life of the Optus D3 satellite by up to six years. Such technology addresses a common issue where geosynchronous spacecraft remain functional but lack the fuel necessary to maintain their assigned orbits. By attaching propulsion modules like the MEPs, companies can extend the utility of expensive space assets without requiring full satellite replacements.
