Northwest Region Wildfires Surge, Hundreds of Fires Uncontrolled in Canada

Updates on July 21 and July 22 report that the Northwest Region of Canada is fighting more than 140 active wildland fires. On July 21, 12 new fires were confirmed, bringing the total to 146, with 53 still not under control. On July 22, five additional fires were added, raising the count to 145 active fires, of which 41 remain uncontained.

The largest blazes include Thunder Bay 36, covering about 318,813 hectares, and the Atikokan Cluster fires at Fort Frances 14 (≈51,800 ha) and Fort Frances 15 (≈41,830 ha). Fire‑ranger crews, helicopters, and heavy‑equipment operators from Ontario and Alberta are deployed to suppress the flames. Fire‑hazard conditions have eased to moderate‑to‑low following recent rain, but crews remain on alert for renewed activity.
