Northwestern University study links social isolation to sex-based alcohol consumption
Researchers from Northwestern University and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have identified a specific brain circuit that links social isolation to increased alcohol consumption, with significant differences observed between sexes. The study, published in ‘Nature Neuroscience’, focused on the neural connection between the basolateral amygdala and the medial prefrontal cortex.
In experiments involving mice, social isolation caused this specific pathway to become hyperactive in males, leading them to choose a 15-percent alcohol solution over water more frequently. Conversely, female mice showed the opposite reaction, reducing their alcohol consumption following isolation. Using optogenetics, researchers were able to trigger this specific circuit in non-isolated males, causing them to drink alcohol as if they had experienced isolation.
While the findings are based on animal models, scientists suggest the results may help explain human patterns of alcoholism. Previous studies involving approximately 17,800 participants in Germany noted similar gendered trends, where lonely men were more prone to alcohol use and associated health risks, while lonely women were less likely to increase consumption.
