Neuroscience study on isolation and alcohol consumption

Overview

Researchers from Northwestern University and the Salk Institute for Biological Studies have identified a specific brain circuit linking social isolation to alcohol consumption. The study, published in ‘Nature Neuroscience’, focused on the neural connection between the basolateral amygdala and the medial prefrontal cortex.

Experiments using mice revealed significant sex-based differences: social isolation caused the circuit to become hyperactive in males, leading to increased alcohol consumption, whereas female mice showed a reduction in consumption. Using optogenetics, researchers were able to trigger this circuit in non-isolated males to mimic the effects of isolation.

While these findings are based on animal models, they may provide a biological explanation for human patterns of alcoholism. The research aligns with previous human studies suggesting that lonely men may be more prone to alcohol use and associated health risks, while lonely women are less likely to increase consumption.
