Norway fuel prices surge following significant tax increase

Norway has experienced a significant rise in fuel prices following a tax increase implemented on September 1. Diesel taxes rose from 3.86 to 8.38 NOK per liter, leading to pump prices reaching up to 30 NOK per liter in some areas. This increase has placed Norway among the countries with the highest gasoline and diesel prices globally.

Critics argue that these politically driven price hikes coincide with broader energy security risks. The conflict in the Middle East threatens critical maritime routes, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait. Disruptions in these areas could limit the supply of crude oil and refined products like diesel and jet fuel, while simultaneously increasing shipping rates and war insurance costs.

Furthermore, the rising costs of diesel and electricity are impacting domestic sectors, such as agriculture in Trøndelag, where farmers are facing difficulties with harvesting and drying grain due to weather conditions and increased operational costs.
