Norway: Poll shows majority opposition to EU membership

A recent Opinion poll conducted in late July shows that nearly half of Norwegians remain opposed to joining the European Union. According to the survey of 1,001 respondents, 49% are against EU membership, while 37% support it. The remaining 14% were undecided.

Public opinion varies significantly by region and age. Support for integration is highest in Oslo, where 53% of residents favor joining the EU. Conversely, opposition is strongest in western Norway, with 54% against membership. Demographically, those over 60 are the only group where supporters outnumber opponents (48% to 42%), whereas younger generations show more critical views toward the EU.

Political affiliations also play a major role in these sentiments. Support for membership is notably low among voters of the Center Party, with 91% of its supporters opposing EU accession. Opposition is also prevalent among voters of the Progress Party (FrP). This follows historical trends in Norway, which twice rejected EU membership in 1972 and 1994.
