Scandinavian debates on nuclear disarmament

Overview

In Norway, a June 2026 survey commissioned by Norsk Folkehjelp indicated that 76% of respondents oppose nuclear weapons and favor the country joining the United Nations treaty banning them. The poll also showed significant support for diplomatic efforts toward mutual nuclear disarmament.

In Denmark, the parliament rejected a proposal to sign the same UN ban. While the left-wing parties Enhedslisten and Alternativet voted in favor, a majority of parties opposed the measure. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that Denmark’s NATO membership prevents the endorsement of a treaty prohibiting the possession of nuclear weapons.
