Norway to suspend Brazilian meat imports from September 2026
Norway has announced it will suspend the import of meat and animal derivatives from Brazil starting September 3, 2026. The decision, communicated by the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet), aligns Norway with recent restrictions imposed by the European Union.
The ban applies to all shipments accompanied by sanitary certificates issued on or after the September 3 deadline. According to Mattilsynet, the measure will remain in place until Brazil is officially re-included in the list of authorized third countries. The primary reason cited is a lack of sufficient information to guarantee that Brazil is complying with regulations regarding the use of antimicrobials in animal production.
While Norway represents less than 1% of Brazil's total beef exports by both volume and value, Brazilian exporters expressed concern that the move could damage the country's global reputation. There are also fears that other nations, particularly in French-speaking Africa, might follow the European Union's lead and implement similar bans.
In contrast to Brazil, other Mercosul members including Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay remain authorized to export animal products to the European market.
