Norway: Voluntary organizations face energy cost crisis

Following the Norwegian government's proposed state budget, concerns have been raised regarding the financial stability of voluntary cultural organizations due to rising energy costs. While discussions regarding electricity price caps have focused on households, voluntary groups operating community centers and meeting places are facing significant challenges.

Existing electricity subsidy schemes for voluntary organizations are criticized for being overly bureaucratic, requiring quarterly retrospective applications. Furthermore, the current support—covering 90% of costs above 77 øre—is deemed insufficient for many. Some organizations report they may be forced to close their facilities during winter months, potentially leading to canceled events and a loss of local social meeting places.
