Norwegian parties clash over fuel tax cuts ahead of September deadline

Temporary fuel‑tax cuts introduced in April reduced gasoline prices by 4.41 NOK per litre and diesel by 2.85 NOK per litre. The Storting set the cuts to expire on 1 September, after which fuel prices are expected to rise sharply.

The Labour Party (Ap) has called a meeting with the Socialist Left (SV), Centre Party (Sp), Red Party (Rødt) and Green Party (MDG) to discuss the fuel situation and the impact of the Middle‑East war on energy markets. Centre Party leader Trygve Slagsvold Vedum argues the cuts must be extended, warning that without extension gasoline and diesel could reach about 30 NOK per litre. Progress Party leader Sylvi Listhaug echoed the warning and said the party would seek an extraordinary parliamentary session if the government does not act.

Høyre leader Ine Eriksen Søreide reiterated that the cuts were intended to end on 1 September, leaving the decision to the government. The Centre Party has threatened to join the right‑wing bloc if the cuts are not prolonged. A recent survey by the Norwegian Truck Owners’ Association (NLF) shows private transport contracts compensate fuel‑price increases far more often than public contracts, highlighting the broader economic pressure.

The debate reflects growing uncertainty in global energy markets and the political challenge of balancing household affordability with climate and fiscal policy.
