Nosferatu spider sightings increase in Germany

The Nosferatu spider (Zoropsis spinimana) is increasingly appearing in German homes, garages, and gardens. Experts suggest this trend is linked to climate change, as the species thrives in warming conditions and seeks shelter in buildings during cooler months to overwinter.

While the presence of these spiders can cause stress for some, experts from the Stuttgart Natural History Museum state that the spiders are largely harmless and do not pose a threat unless they feel attacked or provoked.

To prevent sightings, residents can use window screens or seal gaps in doors and windows. Research from the Universities of Ulm, Toronto, and Simon Fraser suggests that peppermint oil and chestnuts may act as natural deterrents, whereas lemon oil was found to be less effective.
