Nottingham police seize high‑speed e‑bikes in crackdown

Police in Nottingham have confiscated more than 60 electric bikes and scooters that exceed the UK's legal limits for speed and power. The operation, dubbed "Operation Wrangel" and launched in November, targets vehicles capable of speeds over 70 mph (112 km/h) and motor outputs above the 250‑watt limit. Using a portable dynamometer, officers found fewer than one‑quarter of the examined bikes complied with the Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPC) regulations, which cap assistance at 15.5 mph.

Thirty‑eight offenders have been prosecuted, receiving fines exceeding £1,000 and eight penalty points on their licences. PC Ben King said, "Operation Wrangel is an ongoing, long‑term problem management plan for the city centre." The police also highlighted that accidents involving illegal e‑bikes and e‑scooters have generated over £110 million in compensation claims.

The enforcement effort includes education packs and warning letters to inform the public about the need for insurance, tax and a valid licence for non‑compliant electric vehicles.
