UK and Australia intensify e-bike and e-scooter crackdowns

Overview

Law enforcement efforts against illegal high-powered e-bikes and e-scooters have intensified through late 2026. UK enforcement remains heavy, with data showing confiscations of dangerous e-bikes rose by 83 percent in the year leading up to May 19, 2026, totaling 7,049 machines. Authorities expressed concern over modified machines capable of speeds exceeding 70 mph, linking them to fatalities, severe injuries, and criminal activities like drug dealing and phone theft.

Specific incidents include Thames Valley Police seizing a £1,000 e-scooter in Bracknell after a 16-year-old rode it at 43 mph, and Devon and Cornwall Police seizing an illegal e-bike in Bovey Tracey. UK authorities reiterate that legal electrically assisted pedal cycles (EAPC) must have a maximum continuous power output of 250 watts and motor assistance must cease at 15.5 mph. Vehicles exceeding these limits are treated as motor vehicles, requiring licenses, insurance, and registration.
