At least 21 students from the ‘Žarko Zrenjanin’ elementary school in Novi Sad experienced stomach issues after a recreational trip to Divčibare. Reports indicate that the number of affected students may be higher, with some sources suggesting up to 80 children were impacted.

An epidemiological investigation conducted by the Institute of Public Health of Vojvodina, in cooperation with the Valjevo Institute of Public Health and sanitary inspection, identified unsatisfactory sanitary and hygienic conditions in the kitchen area of the ‘Heba’ hotel where the students stayed. While the exact source and transmission route of the infection have not been confirmed, health authorities suspect viral gastroenteritis, which is commonly spread through contact or contaminated hands.

Symptoms recorded among the students include vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, fever, and malaise. As a preventive measure, students who experienced symptoms have been advised to stay home until October 16, while others may return to regular classes on October 19, provided they remain asymptomatic. The school has implemented enhanced hygiene measures and is following all public health recommendations.
