Nova Iguaçu to build Rio de Janeiro's largest stormwater reservoir system

The municipality of Nova Iguaçu is advancing a major flood prevention project that will establish the largest stormwater reservoir system in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The plan involves constructing four new reservoirs and revitalizing a fifth, providing a total storage capacity of 346.09 million liters of rainwater.

Mayor Dudu Reina has secured positive signals from the utility company Light regarding the land cession necessary for the project. Once the land transfer agreement is finalized and reviewed by the Municipal Attorney General's Office, the city will submit documentation to the Ministry of Cities and Caixa Econômica Federal to release R$ 49 million in funding from the Novo PAC program.

The infrastructure is expected to cover an area of approximately 4.7 million square meters and benefit over 100,000 residents across 11 neighborhoods by mitigating the impact of heavy rains and historical flooding issues.
