Authorities warn that without adequate drainage channels and galleries, the highway expansion could act as a barrier to rainwater, significantly increasing flood risks in urbanized areas.

On September 30, 2026, Mayor Dudu Reina met with the ANTT to demand solutions and discuss potential contract changes for Ecovias Rio Minas. The Mayor emphasized that while the city supports highway modernization, it cannot accept improvements that create drainage issues in local neighborhoods, specifically citing inadequate micro-drainage in Posse and damaged pipes in Rancho Novo. The Rio de Janeiro Public Prosecutor's Office is currently monitoring the situation as the municipality seeks judicial intervention.
