Nova Xavantina hospital incident involving newborn abandonment

An 18-year-old woman was arrested after giving birth alone in a bathroom at the Municipal Hospital of Nova Xavantina and placing her newborn in a trash bin. The infant was discovered by the maternal grandmother, who heard the child crying and alerted nursing staff.

The newborn received medical attention and is reported to be in stable condition. According to police reports, the young woman had entered the hospital complaining of back pain but went to the bathroom where she went into labor. She later told investigators she acted out of fear of her parents' reaction to the pregnancy.

The Civil Police charged the woman with attempted infanticide. While the arrest was initially processed in flagrante, the judiciary has since granted her provisional liberty subject to certain precautionary measures. Investigations are ongoing to determine the psychological state of the mother and to coordinate child protection services.
