Newborn abandonment incidents in Brazil

Overview

Two separate incidents of newborn abandonment have been reported in Brazil.

In Nova Xavantina, an 18-year-old woman was arrested after giving birth alone in a hospital bathroom and placing her newborn in a trash bin. The infant was discovered by the maternal grandmother and is reported to be in stable condition. The woman, who cited fear of her parents' reaction as her motive, was charged with attempted infanticide, though she was later granted provisional liberty.

In Rio de Janeiro, a newborn girl was found inside a trash bag in the Engenho da Rainha neighborhood. A couple discovered the infant, who was still wet and had an umbilical cord attached, and transported her to a maternity hospital. The child, named Heloísa Vitória, is receiving pediatric care for potential abrasions. A woman claiming to be the mother arrived at the hospital following hemorrhaging at her residence. Authorities have registered the case as an attempted infanticide and are investigating the circumstances.
