Novate Milanese waste‑plant fire prompts 24‑hour safety ban
A large fire broke out on the morning of 28 July 2026 at the A2A waste‑treatment plant in Novate Milanese, on the outskirts of Milan. The blaze, fed mainly by stacks of paper, engulfed more than half of the recycling island. Twelve fire units, involving roughly 35‑40 firefighters, worked to contain the flames. One plant worker was injured and taken to Milan’s Niguarda Hospital with minor burns and smoke inhalation.
The municipality issued an emergency ordinance lasting 24 hours that closed all parks, gardens and playgrounds, banned outdoor activity in the affected western rail‑line zone, and ordered windows, doors and ventilation units to remain shut. Initial air quality checks by Arpa Lombardia found no abnormal carbon‑monoxide levels or other pollutants. The fire is now largely under control, with remaining hotspots being extinguished and cleanup operations set to begin. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
