Novaya Gazeta to close after 30 years of operation

Independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta will cease operations on November 9, 2026, ending nearly three decades of reporting. Editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov announced the shutdown via a YouTube video, stating the publication had been “killed” by state pressure.

The closure follows a series of escalations, including a September 2026 government designation labeling the editorial team as “foreign agents.” This designation reportedly cut off online donation streams and led banks to block access to funds. Additionally, the publication received an eviction notice from its Moscow landlord, requiring the newsroom to vacate its premises.

Amnesty International described the shutdown as a devastating loss for media freedom in Russia, noting that the publication had previously faced criminal prosecutions, raids, and website blocks. The decision comes amid a broader crackdown on independent media in Russia, where journalists face potential prison sentences of up to 15 years for spreading what authorities deem “false information” regarding the military.
