Closure of Novaya Gazeta in Russia

Overview

The independent Russian investigative newspaper Novaya Gazeta has ceased its Russian operations after 33 years of reporting. The shutdown, effective November 9, 2026, follows intense pressure from Russian authorities and security services.

In statements from the editorial staff, the team reported being forced to close due to an eviction from its Moscow headquarters and the deactivation of its reader donation system, which served as its primary legal income. The editorial board, in a statement titled “We were killed,” attributed the loss of funds to the deactivation of donation streams and banks blocking access, following a September 2026 government designation of the team as “foreign agents.” Staff members also expressed fear that the outlet could be designated an extremist organization, which would expose journalists and staff to criminal prosecution.

United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, condemned the closure as a “new harsh, devastating blow” to independent media in Russia. He called on authorities to cease obstructing the coverage of matters of public interest.

Novaya Gazeta’s history includes covering the Chechen wars and the MH17 plane crash, as well as facing the murders of six journalists. While the Russian newsroom has closed, Novaya Gazeta Europe continues to operate from exile.
