Novaya Gazeta to cease Russian operations on November 9
The independent Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta has announced it will shut down its operations in Russia on November 9. In a statement titled “We were killed,” the editorial board attributed the closure to sustained pressure from Russian authorities and security services.
The publication reported it is being forced to vacate its historic Moscow headquarters and that its donation system, which provided essential financial support, has been deactivated. These measures follow a period of intense repression, including the designation of the outlet as a “foreign agent” by the Russian Ministry of Justice in September.
Founded in 1993 with support from Mikhail Gorbachev, Novaya Gazeta has long been a prominent voice for investigative journalism, focusing on corruption and human rights. The outlet has faced significant violence over the decades, with six staff members, including Anna Politkovskaya, murdered for their work. Recent escalations include searches of editor-in-chief Sergei Sokolov’s home and the arrest of colleague Oleg Roldugin.
