Novi Pazar university students denounce genocide labeling of Serbia

Students of the State University in Novi Pazar (DUNP) issued a public statement rejecting attempts to portray the Serbian nation as genocidal. They emphasized that "the nation is not genocidal, the government is" and called for remembrance of all 8,372 victims of the 1990s conflicts, invoking former President Aleksandar Vučić’s 1995 parliamentary speech as evidence of past inflammatory rhetoric.

At the same time, a self‑styled “blokaderi” group from the same university posted on social media proclaiming Serbs as a genocidal people and referencing the Srebrenica massacre. The post provoked widespread criticism online, with Bosnian scholar Besim Spahić disputing the genocide label and warning of political instrumentalisation of the events.

Both the student protest and the online declaration illustrate ongoing tensions in Serbia over the interpretation of wartime atrocities and the role of the current government in addressing the past.
