Novi Sad Railway Station Canopy Collapse Memorial Marks 21 Months

Twenty‑one months after a canopy at Novi Sad’s railway station collapsed, killing 16 people, citizens gathered for commemorations in both Novi Sad and Niš. In Novi Sad, participants placed sunflowers at the crash site, walked silently along Bulevar Oslobođenja, and read the names of the victims. In Niš, students and locals assembled outside the district court, reiterating that the disaster was not an accident but the result of negligence and corruption.

The events renewed calls for accountability. Legal proceedings continue, with the Infrastructure of Serbian Railways and the Republic of Serbia ordered to compensate victims’ families. The Novi Sad appellate court upheld indictments against former officials, including former minister Goran Vesić, former director Jelena Tanasković, and other senior railway administrators, for serious violations of public safety.

Organisers emphasized the need to keep the tragedy in public memory and to ensure that responsible parties are held to account.
