Serbia railway station collapse aftermath

In late July 2026 a newly renovated railway station canopy in Serbia’s Vojvodina region collapsed, killing 16 people. Inspections found the upgrades were not built to current permits or static‑calculation standards, prompting the government to order demolition of the damaged stations in Szabadka, Topola and elsewhere.

By August 2026, twenty‑one months after the disaster, commemorations were held in Novi Sad and Niš. Sunflowers and silent walks marked the site, while protesters called the collapse a result of negligence and corruption. Legal proceedings continued, with the Infrastructure of Serbian Railways and the state ordered to compensate victims’ families and appellate courts upholding indictments against former officials, including a former minister and railway director, for serious public‑safety violations.
