Novorossiysk port hit by Ukrainian strikes targeting Black Sea Fleet
A series of Ukrainian drone and missile strikes on the Russian port of Novorossiysk has caused significant damage to both military and civilian assets. Satellite imagery and reports indicate that at least four, and potentially up to seven, Russian vessels were hit during the operation conducted on the night of August 11-12.
Among the military targets, the Admiral Makarov frigate, a key vessel of the Black Sea Fleet, reportedly sustained damage to its bow near its vertical launch systems and to its rear radar systems. The Admiral Essen frigate was also identified as a target. These strikes, which utilized dozens of drones—including jet-powered models—alongside cruise and anti-ship missiles, threaten to force long-term repairs and remove critical assets from service.
The strikes also impacted civilian infrastructure and maritime commerce. A San Marino-flagged merchant vessel was hit by drones near the port, resulting in injuries to two Syrian crew members. Additionally, the attacks damaged three grain terminals in Novorossiysk, leading to a suspension of Russian grain exports from the facility. The port remains a strategic hub for both the Black Sea Fleet and Russian oil exports.
