Nowra, Australia installs red‑light speed camera to curb crashes

A new red‑light speed camera has been installed at the corner of Princes Highway and Plunkett Street in Nowra, New South Wales. The device is scheduled to begin operation on 10 August after a month‑long warning period.

Transport for NSW road‑safety regulation executive director Duncan Lucas said the camera targets speeding and red‑light running, citing 14 crashes and 12 injuries – including two serious – at the intersection over the past four years. He noted that research shows red‑light cameras can cut fatal and serious‑injury crashes by 52 % and pedestrian casualties by almost 70 %.

During the warning phase, drivers who are caught will receive a notice encouraging safer behaviour; fines and demerit points will be applied after this period, with revenue directed to the Community Road Safety Fund for further safety initiatives.
