Népszabadság to relaunch in Hungary after ten-year hiatus

The Hungarian newspaper Népszabadság is set to relaunch on October 8, 2026, exactly ten years after its abrupt closure in 2016. The publication, which was once a major independent daily, will return as an online news platform and a weekly printed publication.

Its relaunch was made possible by the unanimous approval of the Népszabadság Association to use the brand's trademark. The new media group will include the long-standing publication Népszava, with its content appearing in the new weekly edition to create a unified platform for their intellectual legacies.

The publishing duties will be handled by Liberty Press Kft. Ownership of the company will be split between 4Sight Media Group Zrt., which will hold a 90 percent stake, and editor-in-chief Ákos Tóth, who will hold 10 percent. 4Sight Media Group, founded by four private individuals, has reportedly secured sufficient funding to cover the first two years of operations.

The original closure of Népszabadság in 2016 by Mediaworks was widely criticized as a politically motivated move by the Orbán government to consolidate media control, as the paper had been critical of the administration. The relaunch aims to provide coverage of Hungarian and international public affairs, society, and economics.
