Relaunch of Hungarian newspaper Népszabadság

Overview

The Hungarian newspaper Népszabadság officially relaunched on October 8, 2026, ten years after its abrupt closure in 2016. The publication has returned as an online news platform operating via the domain nszo.hu, alongside a scheduled weekly printed edition.

The relaunch was made possible by the unanimous approval of the Népszabadság Association to use the brand’s trademark. The new outlet is part of the Népszava media group, and the editorial staff of Népszava will merge into the Népszabadság team. While Népszava will continue to exist as a printed weekly, much of its content will be integrated into the Népszabadság weekly format to create a unified platform.

Publishing is managed by Liberty Press Kft., owned 90 percent by 4Sight Media Group Zrt.—a company founded by four private individuals—and 10 percent by editor-in-chief Ákos Tóth. 4Sight Media Group has reportedly secured sufficient funding to sustain operations for the first two years.

The original 2016 suspension by Mediaworks cited economic reasons, including a 74 percent decline in circulation and significant accumulated losses. However, the closure sparked intense political debate, with critics alleging it was a politically motivated move by the Orbán government to consolidate media control. Following the closure, Mediaworks was acquired by Opimus Press Zrt., an entity linked to Lőrinc Mészáros.
