Népszava announces relaunch of Népszabadság news outlet

The Hungarian publication Népszava has announced the relaunch of Népszabadság as an online news outlet under the domain nszo.hu. The new platform will cover domestic and international public affairs, social issues, and economic topics through news, analysis, reports, and interviews. A weekly print edition will also be released.

Népszabadság will become part of the Népszava media group. The publisher will be Liberty Press Kft., which is 90 percent owned by 4Sight Media Group Zrt., with the remaining 10 percent held by editor-in-chief Ákos Tóth. 4Sight has reportedly secured enough financing to support the launch for two years. The use of the Népszabadság name has been authorized by the trademark holder, Népszabadság Egyesület.

The original Népszabadság unexpectedly suspended its print and online operations on October 8, 2016, under Mediaworks, citing economic reasons such as a 74 percent decline in circulation over ten years and accumulated losses exceeding 5 billion forints since 2007. The suspension sparked political debate, with critics suggesting the decision was not purely business-driven. Following the closure, Mediaworks was acquired by Opimus Press Zrt., an entity linked to Lőrinc Mészáros, which ultimately decided against restarting the publication.
