NRL clubs face venue disputes and player safety decisions

The New Zealand Warriors are resisting proposals to move their finals matches from Go Media Stadium to Auckland’s Eden Park. While the NRL prefers larger venues like Eden Park to maximize gate takings—potentially earning up to $3 million more if the Warriors host multiple matches—Warriors CEO Cameron George maintains the club is entitled to play at its home ground.

In separate news, the Canberra Raiders avoided a significant legal and ethical controversy regarding player safety. The club rejected a proposal from player Corey Harawira-Naera to sign a liability waiver that would have absolved the team of responsibility for future on-field injuries. Harawira-Naera, who requires an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator following a seizure in 2023, had reportedly offered to sign the waiver to resume playing. Raiders CEO Don Furner stated the club refused to take the risk, opting instead to pay out the remainder of the player's contract.
