NRL venue disputes involving New Zealand Warriors

The New Zealand Warriors and the NRL have been engaged in discussions regarding the venue for the club’s finals matches. Initially, the Warriors resisted proposals to move matches from Go Media Stadium to Auckland’s Eden Park, with CEO Cameron George asserting the club’s right to play at its home ground despite the NRL’s preference for larger venues to maximize revenue.

By September, the situation evolved as the NRL indicated a high likelihood of moving the Warriors’ preliminary final to Eden Park if the team advances that far in the series. ARL Commission chairman Peter V’landys stated there is a “90 per cent certainty” that the match would move to the 50,000-seat venue to accommodate high ticket demand. While the Warriors expressed a preference for Mt Smart Stadium, the club acknowledged the necessity of the move to accommodate larger audiences.

In mid-September, the NRL confirmed that the Warriors will host their elimination final against the Newcastle Knights at Eden Park. This marks the first time the Warriors have hosted an NRL final at the venue. The decision follows the Warriors’ 26-16 loss to the Dolphins, while the Knights advanced following an upset victory over the South Sydney Rabbitohs. The move allows for a capacity of up to 50,000 spectators, significantly higher than the approximately 26,000 at Mt Smart Stadium. Organizers are promoting the use of Auckland’s City Rail Link via Kingsland Station to manage the expected influx.

Ahead of the fixture, the Warriors face injury setbacks. Coach Andrew Webster confirmed that strike centre Leka Halasima will miss the match due to a hamstring injury sustained during a warm-up, while prop Jackson Ford is also dealing with an ankle complaint after limping off in the recent match against the Dolphins.
