NRM Secretary General addresses 2031 presidential succession

National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General Richard Todwong has clarified that the party has not yet initiated the formal process to select its 2031 presidential candidate. Addressing the growing endorsement campaign for Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Todwong emphasized that public mobilization and signature collection by supporters do not constitute an official party decision.

Todwong noted that while the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) is expressing the wishes of its members, any presidential ambitions must be handled through established NRM structures. He stressed that the party will wait for formal presentations of intentions before considering the matter at the appropriate time, and noted that the NRM remains prepared to consider other candidates.

In addition to succession discussions, Todwong outlined organizational preparations for the 2031 electoral cycle. These include plans to digitalize the NRM membership register in coordination with the Electoral Commission and the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA), evaluating manifesto implementation, and strengthening party structures nationwide.
