NRW municipal fees jump, raising household housing costs

The Association of Taxpayers reports that in 2026 municipal waste and wastewater charges in North Rhine‑Westphalia rose sharply, outpacing overall inflation. Average wastewater fees increased by 5 percent, while waste disposal fees rose by 4 percent, based on a model four‑person household.

The surge is widespread: 272 of the state’s 396 municipalities have raised wastewater fees, and 113 now charge households more than €1,000 annually for waste services—up from just 21 municipalities six years ago. Officials cite the CO2 levy, higher collection standards and the ongoing municipal financial strain as drivers. The association’s NRW chair, Rik Steinheuer, urges the state government to provide additional lump‑sum funding to ease the burden on residents.

The higher fees add to other housing cost pressures, such as rent and property taxes, and affect both owners and renters who must assess local fee schedules for potential savings.
