Peter Obi disputes Anambra State debt allegations

Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for 2027, has denied allegations from the Anambra State Government that his administration left behind $123.77 million in external debt. Obi maintains that he never personally approached financial institutions to borrow money or issue bonds during his eight-year tenure as governor. He argues that the figures cited by the state government represent multilateral development funding, such as programs from the World Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), which were negotiated by the Federal Government rather than being conventional commercial loans.

Anambra State officials have countered these claims, asserting that the eight external facilities were linked to projects during Obi's term and that the state has been servicing these debts for years. While the state cites a contracted value of $123.77 million, Debt Management Office records indicate Anambra’s external debt was approximately $45.15 million as of December 2014.

In separate political developments, Obi has pledged to imprison anyone involved in election rigging should he be elected president. He also expressed concerns regarding his personal safety leading up to the 2027 elections, prompting calls from legal advocates for increased vigilance from federal authorities.
