Political and legal challenges facing Peter Obi

Overview

Peter Obi, the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate for the 2027 elections, has faced a series of political and legal challenges. In early September 2026, Obi’s convoy was blocked by youths on the Gboko-Makurdi Expressway in Benue State while he was traveling to visit families affected by a 2025 massacre. Obi alleged the blockade was orchestrated by political thugs and an aide to Governor Hyacinth Alia. While the Benue State Government denied involvement and cited a lack of security notification, the Benue State Police Command launched an investigation into the incident. By mid-September, Obi faced legal scrutiny as Abayomi Arabambi filed three separate lawsuits at the Federal High Court in Abuja. Filed under the Freedom of Information Act, the suits seek to compel the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to release official records regarding Obi’s academic and service history. In response, Obi has formally requested that UNN release his academic records, including his 1984 Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, to the public. He stated he has “absolutely no objection to the release of these records” and challenged other presidential aspirants to undergo similar scrutiny. Financial disputes have also intensified. While Obi maintains he left Anambra State with no historical arrears exceeding ₦35 billion and approximately ₦2 billion in an ecological fund, the Anambra State Government has disputed these claims. The state alleges his tenure left behind $123 million in external debt, with approximately $92.35 million still outstanding as of June 2026, alongside unpaid salaries for State Water Corporation workers, teacher entitlements, pensions, and gratuities. In response, Obi released a handover note dated March 17, 2024, asserting a net positive balance of over ₦86 billion.
