NSW and Australian rail authorities launch manufacturing initiatives
The New South Wales Government and the High Speed Rail Authority (HSRA) have launched initiatives to bolster domestic manufacturing through major rail projects.
The NSW Government’s $12 billion Future Fleet Program has opened an Expression of Interest process to design and build the next generation of suburban passenger trains. This program aims to establish a 30-year manufacturing pipeline in the Hunter region, which is expected to support approximately 550 ongoing jobs and up to 780 construction roles. The new fleet is intended to replace existing Tangara, Millennium, OSCAR, and Waratah trains progressively between the 2030s and 2050s.
Simultaneously, the HSRA is seeking expressions of interest to develop an Advanced Manufacturing Facility (AMF) to support the proposed high-speed rail link between Newcastle and Sydney. The AMF will focus on precision engineering and advanced technology to produce repeatable construction components. The facility is intended to strengthen domestic supply chains and provide new career opportunities in regions like the Hunter Valley, which have been impacted by the energy transition.
