New South Wales rail manufacturing initiatives

Overview

The New South Wales Government and the High Speed Rail Authority (HSRA) have initiated programs to bolster domestic rail manufacturing. The NSW Government’s $12 billion Future Fleet Program has opened an Expression of Interest process to design and build next-generation suburban passenger trains. This initiative aims to establish a 30-year manufacturing pipeline in the Hunter region, potentially supporting 550 ongoing jobs and 780 construction roles. The new fleet is intended to replace existing Tangara, Millennium, OSCAR, and Waratah trains between the 2030s and 2050s.

To ensure local economic benefits, manufacturers must adhere to a 50 per cent local content requirement. Potential sites for the new facility include the Broadmeadow Locomotive Depot and a former coal mine at Teralba, with a final decision expected by the end of the year.

In parallel, the HSRA is seeking expressions of interest for an Advanced Manufacturing Facility (AMF) to support a proposed high-speed rail link between Newcastle and Sydney. The AMF will focus on precision engineering and advanced technology to produce repeatable construction components, strengthening domestic supply chains in regions like the Hunter Valley.
