NSW Government Commits $2.1B to Sydney Trains Reliability and $2.5M to Boost Heavy‑Vehicle Training

The New South Wales government announced a record $2.1 billion Rail Reliability Plan for the Sydney Trains network as part of the 2026‑27 State Budget. The package adds $200 million for intensified track, power and signalling maintenance, a $425 million four‑year asset renewal program, and $150 million to upgrade the Rail Operations Centre and improve incident response and passenger communications. It also funds a new Passenger Care and Support team, increases driver and guard staffing on intercity services, and introduces the first new Mariyung intercity trains in almost two decades.

In parallel, the government is investing $2.5 million to upgrade TAFE NSW’s Wetherill Park campus, creating a covered outdoor learning area and modernising an engineering grinding room. The upgrades will support apprentices training in heavy‑vehicle dismantling, assembly and emerging technologies, including a hydrogen‑powered electric prime mover supplied by Pure One. The initiative aims to address an ageing heavy‑vehicle workforce and sustain freight‑sector growth, linking with broader Western Sydney infrastructure projects such as the new airport.
