NSW government to introduce workplace protection orders for retail staff

The New South Wales (NSW) government has announced plans to introduce workplace protection orders (WPOs) to enhance the safety of retail workers. This legislative move aims to combat the rising levels of violence, threats, and abuse faced by frontline staff in retail environments.

The Australian Retail Council (ARC) has expressed strong support for the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward protecting employees from unacceptable workplace behavior. ARC CEO Chris Rodwell noted that the government is showing leadership in addressing retail crime, particularly through intelligence-led efforts like Operation Percentile, which targets repeat and high-harm offenders.

While the state government indicates the WPO scheme will commence within 12 months of the legislation passing Parliament, industry representatives have urged for a faster implementation to address immediate risks. The ARC is specifically looking for the inclusion of urgent interim orders that could quickly prohibit violent offenders from entering specific retail premises before a final hearing is held.
