Australian retail workplace violence and protection measures

A surge in retail violence across Australia has prompted calls for enhanced legal protections for workers. Reports indicate a significant rise in incidents, with Woolworths noting approximately 7,000 incidents this year, including 420 involving knives or blades. One specific incident involving a violent attack and racist abuse at a Woolworths supermarket drew attention to the frequency of such events, noting that the offender had been linked to nine previous incidents at the same location.

In response to these trends, major retail chains have advocated for nationwide workplace protection orders (WPOs). While such orders have been utilized in the Australian Capital Territory and South Australia, they have not been implemented in regions like Queensland or the Northern Territory.

Following these developments, the New South Wales government announced plans to introduce WPOs to combat rising levels of violence, threats, and abuse against frontline staff. The Australian Retail Council has supported this initiative, though industry representatives have urged for faster implementation and the inclusion of urgent interim orders to prohibit violent offenders from entering specific premises before final hearings.
