NSW reduces vehicle registration fees and caps tolls to ease cost of living

The New South Wales government announced a $561.4 million Transport Affordability Package in its June 23, 2026 budget. Motorists will receive a $100 annual cut to private‑vehicle registration and an $80 reduction for motorcycle registration, applied to renewal notices from 21 July 2026. The package also lowers the weekly toll cap from $60 to $50 and eliminates administration fees on toll notices, which the Treasurer Daniel Mookhey described as “one of the biggest rip‑offs on our roads”.

The measures are part of broader cost‑of‑living relief, complementing federal fuel excise discounts and a 12‑month freeze on public‑transport fares. Similar registration discounts have been offered in Victoria and Queensland.

These changes aim to reduce motorists’ expenses amid record fuel prices, with the registration discount period set for 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027.
