NSW road safety under scrutiny after deadly Hume Highway crashes

Peter Frazer, whose daughter Sarah was killed on a stretch of the Hume Highway near Mittagong, is urging stronger action to curb driver distraction and speeding on New South Wales roads. He highlights that younger drivers are especially prone to phone use, with 40% of Millennials and 50% of Gen Z admitting to such behavior, and points to other distractions such as eating and carrying children. Frazer calls for broader adoption of hands‑free Bluetooth systems and notes that recent speed‑limit reductions to 80 km/h on hazardous regional corridors aim to align limits with road design.

In a separate incident, a pole snapped and a car burst into flames after a crash on the Hume Highway at Villawood, Sydney, forcing the highway to close for most of the night. The crash adds to the state’s grim toll of road fatalities – 127 lives lost in NSW so far this year, with the national annual road death count now exceeding 1,300 despite a target to cut deaths to 571 by 2030.
