NTT Docomo to overhaul mobile plans and raise prices

NTT Docomo has announced a major overhaul of its mobile service plans, effective December 1. The changes include a structural shift for its online-only brand, ahamo, which will move from fixed data packages to a three-tier usage-based system. Under the new structure, users will be charged based on their monthly consumption: 40GB for 3,135 yen, 60GB for 4,125 yen, and 120GB for 5,115 yen. This represents a 165-yen increase from the previous 30GB plan, though the base data allowance increases from 30GB to 40GB.

The overhaul also introduces ‘Docomo mini2,’ a successor to the Docomo mini plan, designed with enhanced family discount compatibility. Additionally, Docomo will implement price increases across several existing and legacy plans, including irumo, eximo, and OCN Mobile ONE, with monthly hikes ranging from 110 to 550 yen.

Company executives cited rising costs from inflation, labor, and necessary investments in network infrastructure and 6G technology as primary drivers for the adjustments. To manage the transition, ahamo users currently on the 30GB plan will have a 40GB limit automatically applied on December 1, unless they manually adjust their settings via the new ‘Limit Setting Option.’
