East Nusa Tenggara earthquake: 105 dead and 179,000 displaced
Following a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), the death toll has reached 105 people, with 1,678 injuries reported. Approximately 179,037 residents remain displaced in evacuation centers, driven largely by fear of frequent aftershocks, which have numbered over 140.
President Prabowo Subianto has visited the affected region and allocated Rp 200 billion in emergency aid. This funding includes Rp 40 billion for the provincial government and Rp 20 billion each for eight regencies on Flores Island. To ensure educational continuity, the President has ordered the immediate deployment of tents to serve as temporary classrooms, as many schools in districts like Nagekeo have sustained damage.
Relief efforts are being bolstered by various entities. The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) noted that local logistics warehouses were initially empty, prompting calls for regional buffer stocks. Meanwhile, organizations such as NU Peduli, PPNK 73 Lemhannas, and the JHL Foundation, along with state-owned enterprises like the PTPN Group, are actively distributing food, water, and essential supplies to both official shelters and independent tents used by residents.
