Humanitarian aid for NTT earthquake victims

Overview

Humanitarian aid and recovery efforts for the victims of the magnitude 7.7 earthquake on Flores Island continue to expand. As of early September, the death toll has risen to 135 people, comprising 48 direct victims and 87 due to indirect impacts. Approximately 70,382 residents remain displaced, and damage has been reported to nearly 99,000 houses.

Infrastructure restoration remains a priority. The Ministry of Public Works reports that 19 road sections on Flores Island have been restored to functional status. To support medical recovery, the Ministry of Health has deployed a second phase of 160 health reserve workers to Flores, focusing on psychosocial support and mental health services. Additionally, the Governor of NTT has called for special attention to be given to healthcare workers who were also affected by the earthquake.

Financial support continues through emergency allocations. President Prabowo Subianto has allocated Rp200 billion in emergency assistance for the region, while the Ministry of Finance has confirmed Rp950 billion in ready-to-use disaster management funds.

Relief operations have recently expanded to include government ministries, academic institutions, and grassroots organizations. The Indonesian Ministry of Manpower distributed food packages, cash assistance, and tarpaulins to residents in Manggarai Barat, Manggarai Timur, Manggarai, and Nagekeo. Academic institutions have also mobilized specialized aid: Universitas Brawijaya alumni donated Rp122 million, while volunteers from Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang and Universitas Negeri Malang provided medical services, mental health support, and water filtration systems.

New collaborative logistics efforts have emerged. A shipment of 19 tons of aid, including medicine, baby formula, and shelter necessities, was dispatched from Depok on September 11. This initiative, a collaboration between the Citra Borneo Indah (CBI) Group, the Abdul Rasyid Foundation, and Laznas Yakesma, is being transported via land and sea to NTT for distribution by disaster management teams.
