Tamaulipas governor Américo Villarreal advances Agenda 2030 sustainability agenda
On 29 June 2026 the State Council of the Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development convened in Tampico, chaired by Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya and attended by UNDP representative Silvia Morimoto. The meeting presented the Second Subnational Voluntary Report, expanding coverage to 98 Sustainable Development Goals and documenting 2,331 related actions, building on the 2024 report.
Municipal leaders highlighted local progress. Nuevo Laredo mayor Carmen Lilia Canturosas reported the city’s first voluntary UN local report, describing water‑sanitation projects on the Río Bravo and policies on equality, preventive health and fiscal responsibility. Altamira mayor Armando Martínez Manríquez presented his municipality’s report. The state cited a 42 % reduction in multidimensional poverty, 92.8 % primary school enrollment, 100 % rural school connectivity, a sharp drop in maternal mortality, and a plan to achieve full electrification.
The administration also signed an agreement creating a Tampico–Nuevo Laredo economic corridor to link the border with the port, aiming to boost logistics, investment and jobs. Separately, the Secretaría de Bienestar Social delivered over 25 hybrid stoves to nine rural municipalities, promoting cleaner cooking and fuel savings.
