Nuevo Laredo mayor opens primary school; city appears in UN report

The municipal government of Nuevo Laredo, led by Mayor Carmen Lilia Canturosas Villarreal, inaugurated a new primary school in the ejido El Progreso. The school, authorized by the Tamaulipas State Education Secretariat, will initially serve about 456 students from the western part of the city and is slated to open for the 2026‑2027 school year. Constructed with more than 36 million pesos of municipal investment, the two‑storey campus includes 12 modern, climate‑controlled classrooms and other facilities. Mayor Canturosas highlighted the collaboration with Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya, who provided the official work key that integrates the school into the national education system.

In parallel, Nuevo Laredo became the first municipality in Tamaulipas to have its Voluntary Local Sustainable Development Report published on the United Nations platform, showcasing the city’s progress on Agenda 2030 goals. The report, prepared with support from the state government, UN‑DP and other agencies, underscores local policies in water, health, economic development and governance. Additionally, the municipal administration kept essential services running during the summer vacation period, maintaining health clinics, citizen‑service desks and tax‑discount windows to ensure uninterrupted public assistance.
